Think a garden office is a shed with a desk in it? Think again! There are lots of things to consider for your new space.

Garden offices are more efficient and reliable than they have ever been before. More and more companies are being commissioned to build home offices in people's gardens. Garden offices are perfect for people that work from home and wish to separate leisure and work time, and they're also ideal for those that wish to partake in a hobby outside of their main four walls.

People who own a garden office are able to create extra space in their homes. A garden office is a cost-efficient alternative to building an extension. These external home offices come in many different shapes and sizes and people are usually given the chance to opt for something traditional or more modern.

There are a number of things to consider when you're thinking about obtaining a garden office. Are you interested in owning an office with a view? If so, what will the windows look out upon? The location of the windows will determine how much natural light is permitted to enter the office and how pleasant the view is in general. Most people would rather look out onto a lush green or flowers rather than the next door neighbour's fence.

As you'll need the internet, you’ll need to ensure that you can get a Wi-Fi signal. Your internet service provider should be able to provide you with a booster pack. You will have to ask a professional to wire up the building and, if you'll be using your office all year long, you will have to ensure that it is well insulated. Many garden office owners use free standing heaters or under floor heating mats.

You probably won't need to apply for planning permission from your local authority, but you should check whether you will need it to avoid breaking the law. Security lights, robust locks and alarms are also essential, especially if you'll be storing expensive equipment in your home office.
